The Ridgefield Half Marathon (October 6th, 2013) –This would be my last run before the Hartford Marathon. I know they say to taper before a marathon, but I felt that I had not run enough miles and that I needed this last run to feel confident for the next weekend.
The morning of was chilly once again. I know that’s what happens when it turns autumn, but I still can’t help but be surprised … every time.
I drove Leilannie and I to the starting line and we got there with ample time. We looked over the course map and were told there was only one big hill, but the course was mainly flat. Now, let me tell you, if there is ONE thing I have learned running it is that flat is a relative term. I would soon be reminded of this.
Leilannie and I met up with Brandie and shortly after we were off. Right after mile one was the big hill we were warned of. This hill was HUGE. With that said, I really like hills, so I enjoyed the challenge. As we kept running, we found out that “flat” really meant rolling hills ... for 13.1 miles.
My calves burned and my bum burned and for a second I thought, “Wow, am I going to be sore next weekend?” But that thought quickly left my head, because I was thoroughly enjoying this run. The scenery was amazing. We were running in a tunnel of trees with gold and red leaves all over the floor. The houses we ran by were so beautiful too! Hills + a beautiful course = a great run.
The best part of the run – A family had put it upon themselves to make a water stop! In front of their house they set up a table with cups of water and they had babies (3,4,5) hand out the water to us! Not only was it so kind of them, but it also really helped. Thank you to the family who did that!
